We love when you share your stories with Skate4Cancer, and we hope our community offers a lot of love and support! Sometimes, though, we can't respond as fast as you might need. Here we share a few recommendations for instant help.

Here at Skate4Cancer we are always open to listen to your concerns, hear your stories and give advice about anything related to cancer prevention, awareness, and support. However, we know that sometimes we can’t respond as quickly as you might need. Soon we hope our drop-in-center will offer a space you can visit when you need to be around friends, but until then we’d like to share the following recommendations for instant help:

Kids Help Phone is a great communication tool. They are a 24-hour anonymous help line that is directed to young people. You can make a quick call with a question or speak to someone about a feeling you have but can’t find someone to talk about it with. Kids Help Phone counselors are extremely supportive and knowledgeable.

1-800-668-6868

Group Loop is an online organization that is dedicated to letting teens connect through their site to talk with others who have been affected by cancer. It’s a place where you can build emotional support and social support. Teens can create blogs, instant message, and take part in discussion boards. This is a 24-hour service that is available to teens looking to get information on cancer, teens who have/had cancer and teens who know someone with cancer.

Stupid Cancer Forums is a similar concept to Group Loop. It is an online forum and discussion board about cancer news, cancer support and prevention methods. Stupid Cancer answers questions and concerns through threads that are written on by its members. Its members vary in age and diagnosis from survivors, advocates or those who are currently going through treatment. It’s a great way to vent and express who you are.

We hope this helps and you get all your questions answered. We hope to see you at our events and we encourage you to share your story with us!

Do you know someone with cancer?

Going through treatment can be rough and helping a small way can make a big difference. You don’t have to be a miracle worker to make someone’s experience better.

Tips on support:

Keep a positive attitude. Seeing a smile or hearing a feel good story often lifts people out of a slump.

Offer to run errands. If you’re already on your way to do something it should be no trouble at all to pick up a few things for a friend or family member.

Keep him or her company. Take some time out of your busy day to sit down and watch a movie or television show. Offer to go with them to their appointments, be there for moral support.

Create safe surroundings. During chemotherapy and radiation therapy it’s important to make an area essentially germ-free. If anyone is sick ask them to wear a mask and make sure there is plenty of hand sanitizer in site.

Keeping these things in mind can be very beneficial for those affected by cancer.

It’s a new year and S4C has more exciting projects on the horizon than ever before!

First on the agenda is an initiate that is very close to our hearts. Please take a minute to check out this awesome video produced by our friends “The About Face:” Everything Roof

In collaboration with this inspiring Toronto-based grassroots arts and environmental collective, we want to highlight the importance of eating locally grown food. In big cities like Toronto it can be especially difficult to find healthy fruits and vegetables that haven”t been in contact with unpleasant toxins. In the fight against cancer, urban gardening has a big role to play! Please join us in supporting The About Face and together we’ll stop eating veggies with those bonus pesicides, growth hormones and antibiotics. Good riddance, we say!

Please visit the IndieGoGo page if you wish to make a donation and join the facebook page to show your support!

It’s Halloween!! One of my personal favourite events of the year, seeing as how it involves elaborate make-up, costumes, free candy, and pumpkins. This year, why not roll off your couch from your chocolate-induced coma and take some time to do something truly ghoulish- donate blood!

Approximately every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. Sounds daunting I know, but just one blood donation can save up to three lives. And did I mention free juice and cookies? You have tons of blood coursing through your body, about 5 litres (!), so there’s plenty to go around. And even though about 60% of the population are eligible to donate blood, less than 5% do. And you’ll get to learn your blood type. And free juice and cookies! Did I mention that already?

There are some rules though. In order to donate you must be at least 17 years old, in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, pass a quick medical test done at the clinic, any tattoos or piercings must be at least 6 months old, and you have to be willing to take one hour out of your day to save three lives.

So even though it’ll be pretty fun dressing up as a sexy nerd this year, it’ll be even funner being a hero in your community. Check out blood.ca for more info, including a list of clinics near you.

In case you haven’t noticed that everything has turned pink this month, it’s because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Even the NFL has jumped on board, with players, coaches, and referees donning pink game apparel.
This month, take some time to give your breasts some TLC- Touch. Look. Check. ReThink Breast Cancer launched in 2001, and is the first-ever, Canadian breast cancer charity to bring bold, relevant awareness to the under-40 crowd. Breast cancer in young women tends to spread aggressively, leading to tougher treatments and lower survival rates. But- when caught in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate for women ages 20-39 is almost 90%. That’s a pretty fabulous reason for young women to get proactive about her breast health. And ReThink has brought one more good reason to get on early detection. They just launched the ‘Your Man Reminder’ App for free on iTunes- the App that uses hot guys to remind you to check your breasts. Customize the App to choose your man, his pose, and more. The App also includes great tips on what to look for during checks, a spot to write in notes for anything you may find during your checks, and you’re also able to set a handy reminder of upcoming doctor’s appointments by the sexy man of your choice.

Get the app here- http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/your-man-reminder/id467911146?mt=8

It all started with a colored ribbon. Pink for breast cancer, blue for ovarian cancer, blue for colon cancer and then the colored bracelets came into fruition. Nowthere are a number of different ways in which you can show your support and be inspired to start living a healthier and longer life, CANCER FREE!
Being that it is Cancer Awareness Month and we are pretty much half way through October we thought it would be a good idea to showcase some ways in which you could help out and become more cancer aware.
There are a number of different ways in which you can get a group of people together and throw an event in help bring awareness or even join an event that has already been organized. Here are just a few fun and exciting event ideas:
Head shaving
Dinner auction
Car wash
Donate and wear an iron-on bra
Bake sale
BBQ
Office Idol…or office Karaoke. Donors sponsor contestants
Hold a charity concert at a local bar
Dye your hair pink or wear pink wigs
Have an office costume contest
Ask the men in your office to wax their legs for pledges

•••••••••••
Throwing an event of even just being a part of one helps provide a sense of just doing something. It helps to make a real connection to others that have the same passion and determination to make some kind of a difference in the fight against cancer.
We are all in this together, which is why it is so important to talk, walk and show your support in any way possible.
For more information on how you can become more aware this month or for emotional support (while you wait till the DREAM LOVE CURE CENTRE opens up) be sure to check out these great sites:

In my opinion a healthy balanced diet still includes indulging sometimes. It’s just aboutmaking a smart choice. My favorite is cookies and there’s nothing more rewardingthen making your own cookies and then eating them. You’ll be more satisfied with ahomemade treat and end up eating less cookies then if you were to buy a box of Oreos. Trust me!

These are so easy to make because there’s very few ingredients. Just one rule, youMUST love peanut butter. And I mean REAL peanut butter. Not the kind with all thesugar and oil in it. Even better, these cookies happen to be vegan (if you use veganchocolate or chocolate chips) and gluten free. I’m also confident saying that my recipe isalso totally GUILT free too!
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients

2 cups natural (only peanuts) peanut butter
1/2 cup maple syrup or brown rice syrup1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 cup brown rice flour
1/4 tsp sea salt1 cup non-dairy, g-free chocolate chips

In a mixing bowl combine peanut butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Add flourand sea salt and mix until combined. Then fold in chocolate chips. Bake on ungreasedcookie sheets at 350 F for approx. 11-13 mins depending on cookie size. Makes 1 dozenlarge cookies or 2 dozen small cookies.

If you live in Ontario like we do: how about this unrelenting heat wave!? We sit around begging for summer to arrive and then it gets so hot you can...

If you live in Ontario like we do: how about this unrelenting heat wave!? We sit around begging for summer to arrive and then it gets so hot you can hardly move without becoming a sweaty exhausted creature. Eugh.

However, if you’re anything like we are, the heat isn’t going to keep you inside. That’s why we wanted to share some important sun safety tips with you (brought to us by the Government of Canada):

1 Limit time in the midday sun.

The sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 4pm. Whenever possible, limit exposure to the sun during these hours.

2 When your shadow is shorter than you, look for shade.

Do outdoor activities under a tree, umbrella, or in the shade of a building.

Create shade by planting trees or by using partial roofs, awnings, gazebo tents, etc.

3 Use the UV index each day to plan outdoor activities.

Consult local radio and TV stations or check on-line for the UV index forecast in your area. When the UV index is 3 or higher, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Wear tightly-woven, loose-fitting, full-length shirts and pants.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection and ensure they wrap around your face.

Apply a generous amount of sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) on all exposed areas 20 minutes before you go outside. Ideally, sunscreen should be reapplied 20 minutes after going outdoors so that the product stabilizes on the skin and gives maximum protection. Thereafter, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours (and more often if you are swimming or sweating).

Just remember: the sun has plenty of positive qualities, from vitamin D to mood enhancers. The problems come from overexposure. Be safe out there!

xoxo S4C
